“I don’t think anyone could be more comfortable than I am here.”

Born in 1935 in Madison, Wisconsin, Donna Nodich has lived a full, rich life—filled with family, service, resilience, and joy. A devoted mother of five and wife to Air Force veteran Michael Nodich, Donna worked for what is now American Family Insurance before building a family legacy steeped in military service.

“My boys served in nearly every branch—from Desert Storm to Afghanistan. One was a sniper, one worked in refueling, another became a Navy mortician. Even my daughter married into the military.”

Three years ago, Donna faced a serious medical emergency. After waking up in a hospital with no memory of what happened, her daughter brought her to Council Bluffs to be closer to family. After multiple surgeries, falls, and hospital stays, Donna eventually found her new home at Bethany Lutheran Home.

“I don’t remember everything, but I do remember how welcoming Bethany was. Everyone is so kind. I feel safe here—and that matters most.”

A Life of Memories

Donna’s room tells her story. A photo of her in the back of a 1941 Jeep (just like the one her son now owns and named after her), a nativity set from India gifted by a bishop, and pictures of her children from birth to adulthood line her space.

“The staff just redid my floors and painted my room. I’ve added personal touches, and they let me make it feel like mine.”

Though her mobility has changed, Donna still enjoys as many activities as she can—especially live music from The Merrymakers, games like dominoes and Kings in the Corner, and any chance to laugh with staff.

“I love to tease the staff—and they give it right back. It’s all in good fun.”

One of her proudest moments? Watching her son perform a Johnny Cash tribute show right at Bethany.

Looking Ahead with Gratitude

Donna is hopeful that Bethany’s new bus will help her get out more again.

“I’d love to take a few more outings. Just knowing it’s possible makes a big difference.”

When asked if she’d recommend Bethany Lutheran Home to others, her answer was immediate:

“Absolutely. I trust the staff completely. They’re always willing to help, even with the little things. I don’t think anyone could be more comfortable than I am here.”

Donna Nodich’s story is a powerful reflection of what Bethany stands for—faith, dignity, comfort, and community. From her family’s service to her own strength and sense of humor, Donna is a bright part of what makes Bethany Lutheran Home feel like home.

Beyond her love for games and music, Donna keeps busy with her own small projects and traditions—like decorating with a cherished nativity from India or caring for her beta fish. And even during storms, literal and otherwise, she’s found calm in the care of Bethany.

“I was scared the first time we had a tornado warning here. But the staff were right there. I feel safe now. I trust them—and that means everything.”
