At Bethany, we believe everyone has a story worth sharing—especially the dedicated staff who shape the heart of our community. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Julia Brewer, our Director of Nursing at Bethany Heights Assisted Living. Her path to nursing is anything but ordinary—and we think it’s worth celebrating.

From Hair to Healthcare

Julia didn’t begin her professional journey in nursing—in fact, she spent 15 years as a cosmetologist. But deep down, she always knew her calling was in healthcare.

“I was never supposed to be a cosmetologist forever,” Julia laughed. “It was just what I did until I could go back to school.”

In her mid-30s, she did exactly that—returning to college and earning her nursing degree. That bold career pivot would lead to a lifetime of compassionate service.

Finding Her Way to Bethany

Julia first joined the Bethany family on the skilled nursing side. She worked on what was formerly our dementia unit—known affectionately as “IVY”—and later on Oak.

“That was my home,” she recalled. “I was here for almost four years.”

After that, she stepped away for a bit to explore other corners of the nursing world—spending nine years in urology, followed by stints in OB, triage nursing, home health, and hospice.

“Hospice really brought me back to my passion for the elderly,” Julia shared. “That’s what pulled me back to Bethany.”

She returned to Bethany as Director of Nursing for our long-term care facility, then took a brief detour—before finding her way back again, this time as the Director of Nursing at Bethany Heights in April 2025.

Why She Shows Up

For Julia, nursing isn’t just a job—it’s a way to serve.

“I love being a resource for the staff—educating on medications, techniques, and helping make their jobs easier,” she said. “And I love the tenants. This is their home, and I want to honor that every day.”

Why Bethany?

When asked why someone should choose Bethany, Julia didn’t hesitate.

“Bethany has always been a staple in Council Bluffs. People know this place. They trust it.”

With over 50 years of service in the community—and over 30 years at Bethany Heights—there’s a legacy of care here that runs deep. From long-tenured staff to consistent leadership, Bethany has earned its reputation as a reliable, warm, and family-like environment.

“It’s a family atmosphere. Everyone knows each other. We offer so much—from activities and outings to education and care,” she said.

And for those looking for peace of mind? Julia points to the seamless continuum of care.

“You can move in independently and age in place. And if you ever need skilled care, it’s right next door.”

Final Thoughts

Whether it’s supporting staff, caring for tenants, or helping families feel at ease, Julia embodies what it means to serve with heart.

“This is more than just a job for me—it’s a passion. And I’m proud to be part of what Bethany stands for.”
